Calcasieu Parish District Court Overview

District Court vs City Courts

In-office Clerk records are official, and the Clerk warns that online records are not the official public record. Certified copies should be requested from the Clerk when a document must be used in court, licensing, immigration, employment verification, title work, or other formal settings.

Public access also depends on the case type. Juvenile, adoption, mental-health, sealed, expunged, and sensitive family records may be restricted. Lake Charles City Court separately requires written public-record copy requests on its approved form and redacts personal identifying information for persons other than the requestor or legal representative. Calcasieu Parish Court History

Calcasieu Parish courthouse history affects record research. The parish history says the first courthouse was built in Marion in August 1841 as a log cabin. When the seat of justice moved to Lake Charles in 1852, Sheriff Jacob Ryan, helped by Uncle George and Samuel Adams Kirby, moved the log courthouse by ox through the pine woods. A later colonial brick courthouse was built in 1891 and destroyed in the April 23, 1910 fire that burned much of downtown Lake Charles and damaged many records.

The current historic courthouse was completed in 1912, is listed in the Federal Register of Historic Buildings, was designed as a replica of Palladio's Villa Capra / Rotunda, and has a solid copper dome. Annexes followed in 1958 and 1960, including space connected to the Third Circuit Court of Appeal. The Clerk archive cutoffs and the 1910 fire mean old criminal, civil, succession, and marriage records may require archive review and may not appear in a simple online district-court search.
